Farewell Stout Englishman

"i am so anxious about Y2K i have abandon my small family (they were too weak to survive it anyway), butchered my dog for a source of survival meat, and have moved into a deep, dark cave. good luck."

John Whitehead, Guatemala

Tanka

in distant Tonga
the millennium rises
from silence erupts
the Hallelujah chorus
and the fireworks begin

And from the further side
of a larger island
descendents of convicts
and minor gentry
hear your message

A Happy New Year

Clear Skies in 2000 !

Valentin Grigore, Romania, president of SARM

"I woke up all refreshed on the dawn of this new millennium (or not, depending) thinking that poetry is basically sex. Poetry without sex is, well, boring. An old thought, but somehow essential. Or as Jack Spicer's muse said to him, (something like) Talk all you like, honey, and then let's go to bed.

Best wishes to all for the new dawn, which looks to me very like the old one.

the morning after

(1)

frost on the pavement
first sunrise of two thousand
step over debris

(2)

liverpool sunrise
dawn of the plastic future
already disappointing
I can't find a monorail
or the flying cars

(3)

sunrise, children smile
faces lit with the warm glow
the frost disappears
