LACE
Beauty created from twisted thread —
flowers, shells and fans
from silk-fine cobwebs.

A pretty painstaking craft
proceeding slower than a snail
at one inch an hour
and that good going.

Victorian childhood spent
passing bobbins over and under, over and under
to a song and for one.

Now yuppy mothers-in-law
meet, drink tea and make lace
weaving the latest gossip
into flowers, shells and fans.
