There's no guide with the CD, but the introduction states This CD, containing 1152 books, was compiled by Richard Seltzer. The books themselves are in the public domain and in plain text format. You can copy them onto your hard drive for convenience, or make an archival copy of the CD, as backup in case of damage to the original. But the collection and its indexes, created for your convenience, are under copyright.and the CD does just that, quoting the source at the end of each book. The books are all pre-1920 and include Jane Austen, Byron, Beowulf, the Brontes, Bunyan, de Quincy, George Eliot, Hardy, Keats, le Fanu, Pope, Matthew Lewis, Peacock, Ann Radcliffe, Synge, Percy and Mary Shelley, Thackery, Trollope, Wilde, Wollstonecraft (slight basis toward the gothic), ie most classical texts. All books are in plain text format so easy to read with any browser and the font sizes can be altered to suit the reader. The books can be found either by clicking on the CD-ROM itself, going to the relevant folder and opening the required book or by using the search facility on a PC (NB: if searching for a quote, eg "to be, or not to be" the comma has to be included otherwise Shakespeare's "HAMLET" won't be found). There is an index, however for 1152 books, it's a long index and so it's quicker to go straight to the book. A great resource for readers comfortable with web-browsers. reviewer: Emma Lee. | |
