PICKINGS

Samples of poetry from NHI publications

STILL LIFE WITH TANGERINES
how carefully
you peel the tangerine
stripping filaments with finger and thumb
placing neat spirals of skin
to dry on the kitchen sill

we use the dried peel to flavour tea
or beef carbonade
you say
everything should have a second or third use
nothing should end abruptly

I roll orange fruit from a red net bag
into the polished wooden bowl
a perfect still life

in the restless night
between kisses
we feed each other the plump segments
sweetness bursting on our tongues
ragged diamonds of bright peel
scattered
across the covers
