How fitting that the main story here is Jay Lake's DREAMS OF THE WHITE CITY, which deals with the passing of an old order. Founding editor David Pringle has relinquished control of this most venerable British sf institution, which becomes part of THE THIRD ALTERNATIVE empire with this issue. Of course, unlike Lake's Great Machines, Mr. Pringle's regime was neither moribund nor corrupt. Read the valedictory interview here for some grasp of the enormous impact the man has had upon the scene. As always with a change of ownership, there may be some qualms about the new proprietors. For a fact, the magazine now looks very THIRD ALTERNATIVE, and some of the stories feel TTA-ish too. THE THIRD ALTERNATIVE is a beyond doubt a good thing but so is diversity and unique identity. Replicating THE THIRD ALTERNATIVE under a different title would be pointless, to say the least. There is much to enjoy here, though. Excellent coverage of books, films, TV and graphic novels, even videogames if that's your bag, not to mention the inimitable ANSIBLE LINK. Of the stories, the aforementioned DREAMS OF THE WHITE CITY is one to treasure, being a well written and vivid evocation of an alien world, suffused with ancient Greek cosmogony. Antony Mann's AIR CUBE is a splendid consumer satire; and Douglas Smith also succeeds in evoking an alien society with mythic/religious overtones in his moving tale ENLIGHTENMENT. Long may INTERZONE flourish. | ||
