An attractively-produced glossy-paged A4 format publication. Describing itself as "A journal for rousing the Imagination", the theme of this issue is "spirit of place". This theme is explored by a wide range of contributors. Whilst Buddhism is a key factor here, there is much to appeal to any lover of the arts. In particular I was interested in the ARTS NEWS reviewing recently produced poetry publications and pages dedicated to poetry. Another item of interest was A CONTEMPLATION OF THE GREEN MAN, a study of its origin and influence on British culture. All articles are tastefully illustrated with black and white photographs (some colour) and attractive line drawings. Worth noting is an especially enigmatic photo of a wooden sculpture constructed with branches which give it a snake-like appearance, hence its title, RAPTOR ROOST (in Wyoming). Contrast this with THE GREAT CLEANSING OF THE RIO GRANDE RIVER and a worker attempting to deal with an old dumped sofa and mislaid supermarket trolley. Then move swiftly on to page 34 WRITING THE LANDSCAPE printed underneath a breathtakingly beautiful violet-hued photo of THE ESTUARY, part of an anthology of writings and photographs celebrating the New Zealand landscape. Finally, let me leave you with the small yet effective photograph on page 23 of Ayers Rock's amber beauty. A worthy addition to the coffee table. reviewer: Sarah Crabtree. | |
