Placebo Journal Vol.2 #6

A5 glossy, bimonthly magazine with 40 pages including the cover.

After a hard day at the hospital, this should put the smile back on your face. As well as being light, it is also a little cynical and somewhat acid. Placebo gives us a romp around a doctor's day with choice features such as THE SURROGATE PATIENT and the OSTEOPATHIC WALLET BIOPSY. There is also a section on TRUE STORIES OF MEDICINE which you can take as you like (probably by the spoonful, along with sugar).

It is not always easy to poke fun at a profession, yet keep it amiable and non-malicious. This journal manages it well:

  • We all worry about the population explosion, but we don't worry about it at the right time. — Arthur Hoppe.
  • She got her good looks from her father — he's a plastic surgeon. — Groucho Marx
  • Financial ruin from medical bills is almost exclusively an American disease. — Roul Turley

It is primarily aimed at doctors and contains jargon that may be lost on a general readership. However, much of it is quite clear. This is from MY 'REALISTIC WEEK' IN PRACTICE:

A middle-aged woman comes in stating "You need to check me for STD's because my psychic says my boyfriend has one."
and many people will know that, in this context, STD means sexually transmitted disease.

A general readership might also like to consider the item called TOP 10 THINGS I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO SAY TO PATIENTS which includes:

"I'm willing to talk to you about anything today except what you have been doing in the bathroom for the past week."
An enjoyable read.
